Gut health is influenced by the gut microbiome, digestion, lifestyle and communication between the gut and the rest of the body. Here you can learn more about SIBO, IBS, SIFO, the gut-brain axis and the role of gut bacteria.
The condition of your stomach and intestines shapes how you feel physically and mentally. However, the relationship goes both ways: your emotional and physical state also influences how your gastrointestinal system behaves.
We, Walter and Hans Fischer, founded Gutfeeling Labs. As researchers in microbiology and neuroscience at Lund University, our mission is to give the public deeper insight into their gut microbiome and help them restore balance.
Here, we’ve gathered the most essential knowledge about the intestinal flora and common digestive issues. And if you’re as curious as we are, you’ll also find articles that let you dive even deeper.
In simpler terms, this is your complete guide to understanding and improving not only your gastrointestinal health but also tests, supplements, tips and tricks towards overall wellbeing and healthy ageing.
SIBO – a widespread imbalance in the gut
Global studies show that over 40% of people worldwide suffer from a tender, bloated or swollen stomach. Research shows that around 80% of people with these symptoms have SIBO — a condition that has received relatively little attention in Swedish healthcare and media until now.
SIBO stands for Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth, meaning that too many bacteria are present in the small intestine. Under normal circumstances, the majority of your gut bacteria should reside in the large intestine, not the small intestine. However, bacteria can end up in the wrong place for various reasons and cause discomfort — not only in the digestive tract but throughout the body.
Common symptoms include:
- Bloating
- Abdominal pain
- Gas
- Changes in digestion
But SIBO can also manifest beyond the gut, contributing to issues such as fatigue, skin problems, and a general sense of imbalance.
Gut Microbiota – tiny organisms that shape how you feel
Your gut microbiota consists of roughly 100 trillion bacteria living throughout your digestive system — each with unique functions that influence your entire body. Every person has a distinct bacterial composition, shaped by factors such as genetics, illnesses, environment, age, lifestyle, and even certain medications.
Because your gut microbiota plays a major role in both your physical and mental health, understanding it — and knowing how you can influence it — empowers you to feel as well as possible.
